The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has achieved a significant milestone in its ongoing efforts to combat vandalism and theft of public infrastructure. In a targeted operation, 50 suspects were arrested for their involvement in the theft of rmanhole covers and other public assets. The arrests were announced during a press briefing held on January 6, 2025, in Abuja.
The operation, conducted across hotspots in Kabusa, Garki, Mabushi, and Wuse, led to the recovery of 25 galvanized manhole covers, three vehicles, vandalized solar street lights, galvanized rods used for flyovers, and numerous other stolen items. Among the recovered items were several rolls of high-voltage cables, diesel barrels, plasma TV sets, cement bags, gas cylinders, plastic chairs, pumping machines, and generators. The police also confiscated tools believed to be used for cutting and dismantling public infrastructure, alongside a Volkswagen Sporter bus converted into a diesel tanker and a Toyota Carina II.
Investigations revealed that the suspects operated as part of an organized syndicate, selling stolen items to scrap dealers. This criminal network has caused significant harm to public infrastructure, creating hazards on roads and walkways and undermining essential services.
The suspects, whose identities include Bashir Usman, Shaibu Ibrahim, Sani Isah, and 47 others, were apprehended during the operation. The police are working diligently to bring all culprits to justice and disrupt the activities of the syndicate.
The Commissioner of Police for the FCT expressed the Command’s firm stance against vandalism and assured the public of their commitment to safeguarding critical infrastructure. The Commissioner emphasized that such acts not only endanger public safety but also derail the progress of infrastructure projects meant to benefit the public.
“This achievement reflects our unwavering dedication to protecting the Federal Capital Territory’s critical assets. These arrests and recoveries are proof of our determination to ensure public safety and bring offenders to justice,” the Commissioner stated.
The FCT Police Command reiterated its commitment to collaborating with other security agencies to dismantle syndicates and prevent further damage to public infrastructure. This operation is a strong statement of intent to curb vandalism and maintain the integrity of public assets, ensuring a safer environment for all residents.
