The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has clarified details surrounding the robbery incident that occurred on June 23, 2025, at Zone E, Apo Resettlement, Abuja, while cautioning the public against the spread of misinformation.
In a statement released on Saturday, June 29, by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the Command said it received a distress call around 10:30 p.m. on the night of the incident from a motorcyclist reporting an ongoing robbery. Police operatives were immediately deployed to the scene, where they engaged the armed robbers in a gun duel.
During the confrontation, three individuals sustained injuries, and one later died in the hospital. A vehicle belonging to one of the victims was recovered at the scene.
SP Adeh stated that a joint manhunt involving the police and local vigilante groups is ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and bring them to justice.
The Command also addressed a video circulating online in which a religious leader made unverified claims during a church service. The religious figure alleged that a congregant had knowledge of the attackers’ identities, describing them as “herdsmen children,” and further accused police operatives of withdrawing from the scene and failing to take action.
“These claims are entirely false and grossly misleading,” the police spokesperson said, emphasizing that such statements can undermine public confidence in law enforcement, incite fear, and derail ongoing investigations.
The Command reaffirmed that it had earlier issued an official statement with accurate information regarding the incident and its prompt response.
“We strongly urge religious and community leaders, as well as members of the public, to seek clarification and verify sensitive information through official channels before making public pronouncements,” SP Adeh added.
In the spirit of transparency and justice, the Command has called on the church member mentioned in the video to come forward with any useful information that could assist the investigation.
The FCT Police Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and encouraged residents to remain calm, vigilant, and report suspicious activity to the nearest police station. Residents were also advised to rely solely on verified information from the police for updates on the case.
