FCT Police Bust Notorious Car Theft Syndicate, Recover Three Stolen Vehicles

In a significant breakthrough against car theft syndicates in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the FCT Police Command has dismantled a notorious car theft operation known for receiving, rebranding, and reselling stolen vehicles. Three stolen vehicles, including a Honda Accord, Hyundai Accent, and Peugeot 208, were recovered during the operation.

The case came to light after Mr. Philemon Olaoluwa, a resident of Abuja, reported the theft of his Honda Accord, a 2006 model with registration number RBC 40 NW, to the Central Police Divisional Headquarters. Mr. Olaoluwa explained that his vehicle, which had developed a mechanical issue, was entrusted to a mechanic named Abdulhamid Saidu, recommended by a friend from Apo Mechanic Village. Unfortunately, Saidu, who is now at large, absconded with both the vehicle and its documents instead of carrying out the repairs.

Fortunately, digital tracking technology installed in Mr. Olaoluwa’s vehicle enabled police operatives to trace the car to Rayfield in Jos, Plateau State. Upon arrival, they discovered the vehicle in the possession of Steven Abang, a suspected kingpin with a history of involvement in vehicle theft, rebranding, and reselling operations.

Under police interrogation, Abang confessed to receiving the stolen Honda Accord from Saidu. He also led police to his workshop, where two additional vehicles, a Hyundai Accent and a Peugeot 208—suspected to be stolen as well—were in the process of being rebranded for resale. Abang further revealed that he has facilitated the rebranding and sale of over 16 stolen vehicles over the past four years, supplying a network of standby buyers.

Abang is now in police custody and is expected to face charges following the completion of further investigations. Police are still on the lookout for his accomplice, Abdulhamid Saidu, who remains at large.

The FCT Police Command urges residents to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities, particularly around vehicle transactions, to aid in the ongoing fight against car theft.
