The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has commenced the enforcement of the mandatory minimum Third-Party Motor Vehicle Insurance policy, in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun. The enforcement, which began on February 1, 2025, requires all vehicle owners in the FCT to possess a valid Third-Party Insurance policy before operating on public roads.
The police have advised motorists without insurance to obtain one immediately to avoid penalties. Third-Party Insurance is designed to protect road users from financial losses due to accidents, covering damages to another person’s vehicle, property, or bodily injuries caused by the insured vehicle. This policy ensures accident victims receive necessary compensation while reducing financial burdens on vehicle owners.
The FCT Police Command has warned that non-compliance with the law will attract strict enforcement measures, as part of broader efforts to ensure road safety and protect all road users. Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, has directed officers involved in the enforcement to act professionally, remain courteous, and avoid any form of harassment or extortion of motorists.
Residents are urged to cooperate with the police, as the exercise aims to enhance safety and security on FCT roads. For inquiries or to report suspicious activities, the FCT Police Command can be reached via emergency lines 08061581938 and 08032003913 or the Complaint Response Unit at 08107314192.
