The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has announced the arrest of 82 suspects and the recovery of a cache of weapons, stolen property, and vehicles during operations carried out between May 1 and June 30, 2025.
The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, disclosed this during a press briefing, noting that the achievements were recorded in alignment with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun. According to him, intelligence-led strategies and targeted clearance operations based on thorough crime mapping and hotspot identification led to significant progress in tackling insecurity in the nation’s capital.
During the two-month period under review, the Command handled 49 reported cases, which included kidnapping, armed robbery, theft, and child trafficking, among others.
In the area of kidnapping, seven cases were reported with 17 suspects arrested and three neutralized. Five attempted kidnappings were also foiled in areas including Apo Waru, Byhazin, Karshi, Kawo-Bwari, Gidan-Dogo Forest Kweri, and Abaji. Three suspects were arrested while three others were neutralized during a shootout at Kawo village clinic in Bwari.
The Command also foiled five robbery attempts, resulting in the arrest of six suspects and the recovery of four vehicles, a jackknife, military camouflage, and pistol ammunition. Additionally, 17 suspects were apprehended in connection with five armed robbery incidents, while nine were arrested for theft and five others for car theft.
A total of 12 rape cases were reported, with 10 suspects arrested and four cases currently under investigation. In a related effort, 10 rape victims were rescued, in addition to three trafficked children and eight abandoned babies who have since been handed over to the Social Welfare Centre.
Notably, four suspects were apprehended in a “one-chance” robbery case, while other arrests included one for attempted homicide and two for fraud. One suspect was arrested for illegal possession of firearms.
Among the recoveries made were three AK-47 rifles with magazines, a locally made pistol, one barreta pistol, a pump-action shotgun, two LAR rifles, and 36 rounds of live ammunition. Also recovered were nine walkie-talkies, an axe, a spear, and other weapons linked to robbery cases.
The police recovered 10 vehicles from suspects across the Durumi Division, Kubwa Division, Central Police Station, and Anti-One Chance Squad. Two motorcycles used by kidnapping suspects were also retrieved.
Other items recovered from theft cases include an air conditioning unit, two motorcycles, 27 iron rods, nine mobile phones, 11 power banks, three AirPods, a smartwatch, eight ATM cards, six phone chargers, a Sumac Fireman generator set, and N79,000 in cash.
Looking ahead, the Commissioner of Police said the FCT Command will intensify community policing, intelligence-led operations, and public enlightenment to address evolving security challenges. He assured residents that the command remains committed to taking the fight to criminals and sustaining the peace and safety of the territory.
“The results recorded in May and June reflect our proactive approach and dedication to making Abuja safer for all residents,” he said.
The Commissioner reaffirmed that the police would continue to work with communities and stakeholders to ensure security across the FCT.
