Detectives at the Zone 2 Police Command in Onikan, Lagos, have arrested a middle-aged man posing as a police officer after he attempted to secure the bail of two suspected international fraudsters in custody.

The fraud suspects were apprehended in the Lekki area of Lagos with forged certificates from a Ghanaian university and were alleged to have been deeply involved in internet scams across various foreign countries. Their illicit activities reportedly earned them vast wealth, and they allegedly attempted to bribe detectives with ₦66 million following their arrest.

The impostor, claiming to be a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) named Sunday Udoka, arrived at the station with a lawyer and sought the bail of the suspects, promising to produce them when required. However, upon presenting his police warrant card, discrepancies raised suspicion.

The card featured the rank of an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) alongside the name “Sunday Udoka,” but it was altered to display the DSP rank. Further scrutiny revealed an indecipherable signature and the abbreviation “DCD” where the Inspector General of Police’s signature was expected.

Upon interrogation, the man confessed to fabricating the warrant card in a car park, affixing his passport photograph, and forging a signature. He disclosed that he is a police inspector serving in the Anti-Kidnapping Unit in Edo State, where he joined the force as an ICT specialist in 2014. He admitted forging the card to solicit bail for the suspects, whom he described as friends.

Meanwhile, investigations into the fraud suspects revealed that they operated over 100 bank accounts across multiple countries. Police sources reported receiving numerous calls from prominent individuals seeking to exonerate the suspects, offering fabricated narratives to undermine the investigation.

Despite these pressures, the Zone 2 Command has resolved to charge all suspects to court. A police spokesperson affirmed the Command’s commitment to upholding justice, emphasizing that the ongoing investigations aim to uncover the full extent of the suspects’ criminal network.
