In a significant gathering held on May 2nd and 3rd at the NAF Conference Centre in Abuja, the maiden edition of the Etiquette Africa Conference and Award took place, addressing the critical issue of incivility and its impact on Africa’s development. Organized by Etiquette Africa and led by its founder and executive director, Etienying Akpanusong, the conference drew a wide array of experts, leaders, and stakeholders.

The event was notably hosted by His Excellency, Obong Victor Attah, former governor of Akwa Ibom State and Grand Patron of the Etiquette Africa Conference. The Guest of Honour, Hon. Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye Honourable Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development. The keynote address was delivered by H.E. Ambassador Usman Sarki, former permanent representative of Nigeria to the United Nations, setting a profound tone for the discussions.

The first panel session, moderated by veteran broadcaster Cyril Stober, featured distinguished panelists including Dr. Obiageli (Oby) Ezekwesili, former two-time minister in Nigeria and former vice president of the World Bank; Mrs. Eugenia Abu, a veteran broadcaster; Dr. Linus Okorie, a leadership expert; Dr. James Komolafe, a behavioural alignment expert; and a representation from the National Orientation Agency by Mr. Anthony Eromosele, SA to the Director General Mallam Issa-Onil.

These experts from various sectors discussed the pervasive issue of declining civility across Africa, highlighting its roots in materialism, technology’s impact, the erosion of traditional values, and the breakdown of family structures. Poor governance and ineffective leadership were underscored as significant contributors to the culture of incivility.

The consequences of incivility were vividly illustrated through discussions of its impact on mental health, business development, and national reputation, with real-world examples such as bullying in schools and the disastrous failure of government initiatives due to uncivil behavior.

To combat these issues, participants formulated actionable recommendations, focusing on revitalizing education, strengthening parenting, promoting effective leadership, fostering national dialogue, and implementing policy changes.

The conference culminated in a Dinner and Awards ceremony on May 3rd at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, attended by dignitaries including H.E. Obong Victor Attah, HRH King Alfred Dieti-Spiff, and Mr. Femi Adesina. This event not only celebrated achievements but also reinforced the commitment to fostering a culture of civility across Africa.

In conclusion, the Etiquette Africa Conference set a foundational platform for ongoing dialogue and action, emphasizing the collective effort required from all societal sectors to foster a more civil and prosperous Africa. The journey toward this goal is complex but deemed essential for the sustainable development and well-being of the continent.
