Ekwunife Mourns Two Nigerian Former First Ladies, Mrs Victoria Aguiyi-Ironsi And Mrs Adanma Okpara

The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Uche Ekwunife PhD, has joined the government and the people of Abia state and all well-meaning Nigerians in mourning the passing of Nigeria’s two former first ladies, Her Excellencies Chief Mrs. Adanma Okpara and Mrs. Victoria Aguiyi-Ironsi. This was contained in a press statement by Mr. Kingsley Ubani, SA Media to Senator Uche Ekwunife.

The late Chief Mrs. Okpara was the wife of the enigmatic late Chief Dr. Michael Okpara who served between 1959 – 1966 as the premier of the defunct Eastern Region while Mrs. Aguiyi-Ironsi was the wife of late Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi who between January-July 1966 served as the first Nigeria Military Head of state and supreme commander of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

In her condolence message, Ekwunife expressed grief over the death of the two outstanding former first ladies, describing the duo as matriarchs who represented the best of their generations. The Senator noted that they were role models who through their lifestyles inspired many women in politics, governance and administration.

These two matriarchs would always be remembered for their resolute devotion to their families especially during their husband’s reign as premier of the old Eastern Region and the Military Head of State respectively. “Known for their love, charming humour and compassion for humanity I pray that their families be comforted by sweet memories and encouraged by the legacies left behind by the former first ladies”, Ekwunife stated.

The Chairman Senate Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation further on behalf of her family and the good people of Anambra Central Senatorial District extended condolences to the immediate families, while praying God to grant the duo eternal rest in heaven.
