The Nigeria Police Force has apprehended two suspected political thugs in Edo State ahead of the upcoming election, seizing firearms in a series of overnight raids aimed at preventing electoral violence.
The suspects, identified as 43-year-old Edwin Obanor and 41-year-old Audu Tajudeen, a PDP member from Ugbogbo quarters in Igara Akoko, Edo, were arrested in separate operations based on intelligence reports. Police operatives, acting swiftly on a tip-off, arrested Obanor, alleged to be the leader of an armed group, at Oredo Ward 4 around 9 p.m. Three cut-to-size locally fabricated pistols were found in his possession. Tajudeen was arrested later in the evening in Igara Akoko, with a locally made gun recovered from him.
The Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with other security agencies, has vowed to deal decisively with individuals in possession of illegal firearms and those intending to disrupt the peace during the election. Both suspects are currently in police custody and will face legal prosecution.
The Force emphasized its commitment to ensuring a peaceful and orderly election process in Edo State and reassured the public that it will continue to prioritize the safety of lives and property. Citizens are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or through the official help lines.
ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, stated that the police will not tolerate any attempt to incite violence during the electoral period and will take all necessary steps to maintain law and order.
The Edo State election is scheduled for Saturday, with security agencies on high alert to prevent disruptions and ensure a smooth electoral process.
