A prominent stalwart of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and a strong opponent of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Queer, and Transgender (LGBTQ) advocacy in Edo State, Mr. Momodu Bukhari, appears to be preparing to contest for a Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.
Sources close to Bukhari revealed to our reporter that following the APC’s victory in the last governorship election, which brought Monday Okpebholo into office as Governor of Edo State, Bukhari—known to be a close ally of the new governor—is optimistic about securing the Edo North Senatorial District seat in the forthcoming polls.
In addition to his political connections, Bukhari is believed to be leveraging the popularity he has gained through years of vocal opposition to LGBTQ rights and culture. His strong stance, particularly within the Muslim communities in the northern part of Edo State, is said to have solidified a loyal support base.
A reliable source stated that Bukhari’s anti-LGBTQ activism has endeared him to many conservative Islamic groups and youths who oppose same-sex relationships. “Within his Muslim community, particularly in Edo North, Bukhari would win overwhelmingly if he contests,” the source added.
Although he has yet to officially declare his intention, another insider confirmed that Bukhari plans to establish a media office soon to put publicity structures in place ahead of the commencement of political activities, once the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) lifts the ban on 2027 electioneering.
Some political analysts familiar with his advocacy believe that if Bukhari eventually makes it to the National Assembly, he may become a strong voice pushing for stricter enforcement and harsher penalties under Nigeria’s anti-same-sex marriage laws.
As the political landscape begins to shape up ahead of the 2027 elections, Bukhari’s potential candidacy is expected to stir conversations, especially around social and cultural issues in Edo State and beyond.
