Ecobank Nigeria has joined forces with Soto Gallery to launch an international art exhibition, “+234Art,” dedicated to showcasing and uplifting emerging young Nigerian artists. The 10-day art fair, scheduled to kick off on March 22, 2024, in Lagos, aims to contribute to the growth of Nigeria’s art sector and its global recognition.
Bolaji Lawal, Managing Director/Regional Executive of Ecobank Nigeria, emphasized the bank’s commitment to promoting the creative industry in Nigeria and across Africa. Lawal expressed Ecobank’s goal of projecting Nigerian creatives, providing them with a platform to showcase their works locally and globally. The partnership with Soto Gallery aligns with the bank’s strategy to invest in the potential of young artists for the country’s brighter future.
Lawal extended a special invitation to “un-galleried” emerging Nigerian artists, highlighting the opportunity for them to gain exposure and enhance their works. “Un-galleried artists” refers to those without traditional gallery representation, facing challenges in exposure and selling their creative work.
Tola Akerele, Founder of Soto Gallery, shared that the inaugural “+234Art” exhibition follows the thematic direction of ‘A New Heritage.’ The free-entry fair aims to be an immersive showcase of Painting, Photography, and Sculpture, providing a closer look at the diverse creativity within Nigeria’s emerging art scene.
The exhibition seeks to create a sustainable platform for young artists, offering workshops alongside the art fair to enhance skills and understanding of the industry. Akerele emphasized the economic benefits, including the potential for art purchases, elevating artists into better socio-economic classes.
Ms. Akerele highlighted the broader benefits of the exhibition, including cultural resonance, talent discovery, wealth creation, learning experiences, networking opportunities, and social impact. Artists interested in participating can submit their artworks via email to submissions@plus234art.com.
Ecobank Nigeria’s commitment to driving tourism, culture, and the creative industries is evident through its involvement in various events, such as the yearly Adire Lagos Experience, PADE for World Photography Day, and partnerships with Cobhams Asuquo, Redbull Dance Your Style, BellaNaija Style Summit, and the historical Nollywood exhibition, “Loosing Daylight.”
Odidison Omankhanlen, Head of Marketing and Corporate Communication for Ecobank Nigeria, expressed the bank’s dedication to fostering the growth and recognition of Nigeria’s vibrant creative community.
