Dr. Ade Dosunmu, former Director General of NIMASA and public policy expert, has praised the recent Supreme Court judgement affirming the autonomy of local governments. The ruling, brought forward by the Attorney General of the Federation, has been described by Dosunmu as a “landmark judgement that is long overdue, but timely.”

Dr. Dosunmu emphasized the significance of this decision in strengthening Nigeria’s federal system. “This judgement will undoubtedly guarantee the delivery of the dividends of democracy to the grassroots, represented by the 774 local governments,” he stated. He highlighted that the structured federal system now ensures the independence of each tier of government, similar to other federal jurisdictions globally.

Addressing state governors, Dosunmu urged them to accept the ruling in good faith, viewing it as a necessary sacrifice for the advancement of democracy. He also called on local government chairmen to see this as a call for greater accountability and dedication to duty, noting, “To whom much is given, much is expected.”

Dr. Dosunmu encouraged Nigerians residing in the 774 local governments to actively engage in civic activities, demand accountability from their local leaders, and monitor how allocated funds and projects are managed.

In addition, he commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his bold initiative, which led to this historic judgement. “I congratulate and commend the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for this bold and audacious initiative that has opened new vistas of opportunities for Nigerians as we consolidate our democratic journey,” he said.

Dr. Dosunmu concluded his statement with a call for robust civic engagement and accountability at the local government level, ensuring that the benefits of this judgement reach all citizens.
