It was a day of grandeur and mixed emotions as Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) Sylvester Abiodun Alabi was celebrated at a pull-out parade and birthday reception marking his retirement after 35 years of distinguished service in the Nigeria Police Force. The events, held on December 31, 2024, at the Police College, Ikeja, and the Victoria Garden Event Center, Alausa, brought together dignitaries, family, friends, and well-wishers.
The retirement ceremony began with a formal pull-out parade at the Police College, where Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, the chief host and DIG Alabi’s coursemate, delivered a heartfelt tribute. Describing Alabi as an exceptional officer and confidant, IGP Egbetokun lauded his remarkable career and unwavering commitment to policing. “DIG Alabi has served honorably with integrity and dedication,” he stated, adding, “He may not retire as a billionaire, but he carries with him the satisfaction of a job well done and the prayers of those he served.”
DIG Alabi, visibly moved, expressed gratitude and fulfillment in his farewell speech, reflecting on his career and the impact he had on the lives of young officers he mentored. “Leadership is about one life influencing another,” he said, quoting John Maxwell. He acknowledged the support of his colleagues, family, and the institution, and sought forgiveness from anyone he might have offended during his service.
The celebrations continued at the Victoria Garden Event Center, where a grand reception doubled as a birthday party for DIG Alabi, who turned 60. Guests from the security, legal, and business sectors graced the occasion, adorned in elegant attire befitting the festive atmosphere.
A highlight of the event was the unveiling of “Against All Odds”, a book chronicling DIG Alabi’s journey in the Nigeria Police Force. Written by Joshua Uloko, CEO of *City Pride Magazines*, the book encapsulates Alabi’s contributions, challenges, and achievements in his 35-year career.
The celebrant, dressed in a regal milk-colored agbada and traditional cap, was the center of attention as tributes poured in from colleagues, friends, and associates, including renowned lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) and other dignitaries. Speakers described him as a gentleman and an exceptional officer whose legacy will inspire generations of police officers.
In his closing remarks, DIG Alabi pledged to remain a resource for the institution and encouraged continued efforts to uplift the Nigeria Police Force. “I leave with a sense of pride and fulfillment,” he said, signaling the start of a new chapter in his life.
The events marked a fitting tribute to a life of service and leadership, drawing the curtain on a distinguished career while ushering in a new phase filled with hope and celebration.
