On January 31st, 2024, the Zonal Criminal Investigation Department (ZCID) Zone 2 Command Headquarters, Onikan Lagos, successfully arrested Blessing Effiong ‘f’ and her husband, Bassey Effiong ‘m’, for allegedly stealing $51,000 USD from her employer’s residence in Lekki, Lagos.
Blessing Effiong, recommended for employment by agent Anthony ‘m’, began her domestic staff role on December 23rd, 2023. Shockingly, just three days into her employment, she absconded with a substantial sum of $51,000 USD, fleeing with her husband to Cross River State.
After a thorough investigation, both suspects were apprehended on January 31st, 2024. The inquiry unveiled that Blessing Effiong had deceived Anthony with false information and unregistered phone numbers not linked to her identity. She also failed to complete her employment application form, signaling fraudulent intentions.
Initially denying the extent of the theft, Blessing Effiong later confessed to stealing $30,000 USD and admitted to giving $20,000 USD to her husband, Bassey Effiong. In his confession, Bassey Effiong revealed using the stolen funds to settle his late mother’s medical bills, purchase a Tipper Truck, Two Motorcycles, and complete a construction project in Cross River State.
Both suspects now face charges brought before the court, following the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, AIG Olatoye A. Durosinmi’s directive. AIG Durosinmi emphasizes the importance of thorough background checks for domestic staff employment to ensure public safety and prevent falling victim to criminal elements.
