Former President Olusegun Obasanjo was celebrated on Monday as he marked his 88th birthday in Abeokuta, Ogun State, with prominent Nigerians and well-wishers acknowledging his contributions to national development.
Among those who joined the festivities was the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, who praised Obasanjo’s legacy, describing him as a revered elder statesman and a father figure whose impact on Nigeria remains immeasurable.
Reflecting on Obasanjo’s leadership, Obi highlighted the economic progress recorded during his presidency from 1999 to 2007. He noted that Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew from approximately $59 billion to $278 billion, while the country’s per capita income rose from $490 to $1,800. Additionally, he emphasized the drastic reduction in Nigeria’s foreign debt from $32 billion to $3.2 billion and a significant boost in foreign reserves.
“His true patriotism and bold sacrifices for a better Nigeria and Africa remain remarkable,” Obi stated, adding that Obasanjo’s unwavering commitment to national unity continues to stand out.
The former Anambra State governor also offered prayers for Obasanjo, wishing him more years of good health and continued service to the nation.
The birthday celebration drew dignitaries from different sectors, underscoring Obasanjo’s lasting influence in Nigeria and beyond.
