The Nigeria Police Force’s decision to demolish the Police Officers Wives Association (POWA) Shopping Complex in Ikeja, Lagos, has sparked a wave of inquiries and public concerns. The complex, owned by the Nigeria Police Officer’s Wives Association and designated for police officers’ wives and relatives, is slated for demolition to pave the way for the immediate construction of a modern shopping complex on the same premises.
Citing professional assessments highlighting the current structure’s potential as an environmental hazard due to flood susceptibility and possible structural instability, the Force defended its decision for the impending demolition and subsequent reconstruction. This move, planned to occur in phases, is stated to be in the best interest of safety and community improvement.
Addressing the impending demolition, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, emphasized that all legal requirements have been met. Adejobi assured that occupants were duly notified in advance to facilitate their timely evacuation. Temporary accommodations within the complex have been arranged for the occupants during the reconstruction period.
Furthermore, the Lagos State Government agency’s expertise was sought, requisite assistance obtained, and approvals secured for the demolition, according to the statement.
Despite the Force’s assurances and compliance, concerns have been raised, dismissing the claims of wrongdoing and illegality by the Force or the POWA. Nigerians have been urged to dismiss what has been described as “frivolous claims, unsubstantiated protests, and media blackmail” while emphasizing the commitment of the Police and its affiliates towards enhancing the welfare and living standards of its personnel and families.
The planned demolition, scheduled to proceed, remains a subject of public interest and scrutiny, as stakeholders weigh the balance between safety concerns and community redevelopment.
The statement by the Force Public Relations Officer was issued on December 30, 2023, seeking to allay concerns and clarify the motives behind the impending demolition and reconstruction of the POWA Shopping Complex in Ikeja.
