Six alleged armed robbers were neutralized by the Delta State Police Command after gunfire exchanges with the police at two different Delta State locations.
According to DSP Bright Edafe, the public relations officer for the state police command, one person was shot and killed in Asaba while five people were slain in Warri.
Both times, according to Edafe, the suspects were hurt; they were carried to the hospital, where they passed away.
In the Warri incident, Edafe claimed his men arrived at the area after receiving a distress call that an armed robbery gang was terrorizing Igbudu Market/Old Welfare.
He claimed that when the hoodlums saw the cops, they took off running, but the brave officers pursued them.
“The hoodlums engaged the operatives in a gunfight somewhere around Old Welfare Road, but they were unable to hold off the cops due to their superior firepower.
Five of the hoodlums were seriously shot during the gunfight, but two locally built, cut-to-size single barrel weapons, three rounds of used ammunition, three rounds of live ammunition, and one knife were found on them.
He said, “The injured suspects passed away while they were being carried to the hospital.”
In the Asaba incident, Edafe claimed that in response to complaints from locals about hoodlums’ activities that deprive them of their possessions, the command had dispatched tactical units to several places in the capital city.
He said that on June 30, the command Rapid Response Squad (RRS) was conducting a visibility patrol along Ezenei road when they spotted four suspicious guys in an unregistered minibus.
“When the suspects saw the police, according to Edafe, they sped away across the Asaba-Benin Expressway and into Issele-Asagba, adding that the police gave pursue.
According to him, the suspects were attempting to pull a double cross when their car crashed into the police van. He added that the suspects got out, abandoned the car, and then fled into the nearby jungle while firing at the police officers.
According to the police spokesman, when his troops opened fire, “one of the suspects sustained gunshot injury while others escaped with bullet wounds,” in the ensuing duel.
Six spent rounds, two live cartridges, a large iron cutter, a cut-to-size English double barrel, and a pistol built locally were all found.
“The wounded suspect was sent to Agbor General Hospital, where he passed away while receiving care. Arresting the other gang members who are running away is a major priority.
Both crimes were still being investigated, Edafe added.
