In preparation for the upcoming local government elections on July 13, 2024, Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, has ordered a massive deployment of police forces across the state. This measure aims to ensure a smooth and secure electoral process. The deployment will cover all polling units, Registration Area Centres (RACs), collation centers, and the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) offices. Additionally, Marine Police have been assigned to maintain peace in the waterways during the election.
To enhance security, a restriction on vehicular movement will be enforced from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM on election day. Only officials on emergency and essential duties, including accredited election monitors and observers, will be allowed passage. NABTEB examination students are also exempted from this restriction. CP Abaniwonda advises the public to comply with this directive, warning that violators will face legal consequences. Furthermore, VIP escorts will be banned during the election, and any officers violating this rule will be arrested and sanctioned.
The Commissioner also emphasized that non-state actors such as vigilante groups, anti-cult volunteers, and hunters will not participate in the election process. Any interference by these groups will be met with strict action. CP Abaniwonda urges residents to remain law-abiding and assures them that the police will uphold their duty to protect lives and property, ensuring public tranquility throughout the election period.
