The Delta State Police Command has made significant strides in curbing armed robbery activities in the metropolis, resulting in the death of a suspected armed robber and the arrest of another.

On May 31, 2024, at approximately 9:40 PM, operatives of the Ekpan Divisional undercover surveillance patrol team encountered a tricycle with three occupants along Army Barracks Link Road off Refinery Road, Ekpan. The suspects attempted to rob the operatives, unaware they were policemen. When the hoodlums realized their mistake, they fled, prompting a chase. One suspect was apprehended with a black bag containing a cut-to-size double-barrel gun and two live cartridges. Under interrogation, the suspect revealed that his accomplices had escaped and that their modus operandi included double-crossing and robbing victims, sometimes resorting to kidnapping.

The suspect led police to their hideout along NNPC Link Road but attempted to escape by jumping off a bridge. He was subsequently apprehended and taken to Ekpan General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Efforts are ongoing to capture the remaining members of the gang.

In a separate incident on June 2, 2024, at around 11:15 PM, the DPO of Okpanam Division responded to a distress call about a robbery involving seven young men on two motorcycles. The DPO led a team to the scene, where the suspects fled upon sighting the police. Six suspects escaped, but one, identified as Emeka Okafor, was arrested, and a motorcycle was recovered. A manhunt for the remaining suspects is underway.

Commissioner of Police Abaniwonda Olufemi commended the swift actions of the DPOs and their teams, urging all officers to maintain vigilance and dedication to ensure peace in their jurisdictions. He also encouraged residents to be security-conscious, monitor their environments, and report any suspicious activities to the police. The public can contact the command’s control room at 08036684974 for assistance in case of distress.
