The Delta State Police Command has announced significant breakthroughs in its ongoing efforts to combat crime, including the arrest of suspected cultists and armed robbers, the recovery of firearms, and the death of a suspected kidnapper during a police operation.
Acting on intelligence, on June 19, 2024, at approximately 3:30 PM, special operatives led by ASP Julius Robinson stormed a criminal hideout in Sapele. The operation resulted in the arrest of four suspects: Amechi Ichiagu, 25, from Ozalla Town in Nkanu West LGA, Enugu State; Akpomiemie Larry, 32, from Jesse Community in Ethiope West LGA, Delta State; Bright Ovie, 36, from Ugbomaja Community in Ethiope West LGA, Delta State; and Ese Ogodo, 35, from Okpe community. The police recovered a locally made cut-to-size gun and five rounds of live cartridges. Preliminary investigations indicate the suspects are involved in both cult activities and house-to-house armed robberies. The investigation is ongoing.
On June 20, 2024, at about 11:47 PM, ASP Julius Robinson and his team, acting on credible intelligence, conducted a sting operation targeting a criminal hideout along Ughelli-Patani Road. Upon arrival, the police team was met with gunfire from the suspects. In the ensuing gun battle, one suspect sustained severe injuries and later died at the hospital. The police recovered two Beretta pistols and five rounds of live ammunition from the scene. Efforts to apprehend the fleeing suspects are ongoing.
On June 17, 2024, at approximately 9:00 PM, the Special Anti-Cult Unit (SACU) arrested Christian Bugwa, 28, from Nsukwa village, Delta State. The police recovered a cut-to-size locally made single-barrel gun and one live cartridge. Bugwa admitted to being a member of the Supreme Eiye Confraternity. The police are continuing efforts to arrest his accomplices.
CP Olufemi Abaniwonda emphasized the importance of community collaboration in fighting crime. He urged the public to provide the police with useful, timely, and credible information, stressing that security is a collective responsibility. CP Abaniwonda also called on youths to shun criminal activities, particularly cultism, as the police are committed to reducing crime to the barest minimum in the state.
