Customs To Revive Idiroko Scanning Machine, Strengthen Border Security With Modern Technology

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Idiroko, has unveiled plans to revive the long-abandoned scanning machine at the Idiroko Border to enhance operational efficiency and improve border security. Comptroller Mohammed Shuaibu, the Customs Area Controller (CAC) of Ogun Area 1 Command, made this announcement during the 2025 International Customs Day celebration at the Idiroko Border in Ipokia Local Government Area.

Speaking at the event, Comptroller Shuaibu described the scanning machine as a critical tool for streamlining trade processes and reducing physical inspections. He revealed that the machine, unused for over five years following the 2018 border closure, is being inspected to assess its condition and determine necessary repairs. “The federal government has invested heavily in this equipment, and we are committed to bringing it back to life soon to enhance our efficiency and support trade facilitation,” Shuaibu stated.

The celebration, attended by key stakeholders including representatives from the Nigerian Army, Police, Immigration Service, DSS, NDLEA, NSCDC, and customs officers from the Republic of Benin, highlighted the importance of collaboration and innovation in Customs operations.

Shuaibu emphasized the need for stronger partnerships and the adoption of modern technology to address emerging challenges at Nigeria’s porous borders. He noted the Command’s significant achievements in intercepting smuggled firearms and ammunition, underscoring its dedication to combating illegal activities and ensuring national security.

In his lecture, Assistant Controller of Customs (ACC) Clement Amaweh stressed the importance of leveraging digital technology to modernize Customs processes. He cited the e-Customs project, Single Window Platform, and stakeholder cooperation as essential tools for boosting efficiency, reducing corruption, and enhancing revenue generation.

“The e-Customs project aims to digitize all Customs operations, including administration, payments, border management, and import/export processing, creating a more transparent and efficient system that also upholds national security,” Amaweh explained.

The event also reinforced the NCS’s commitment to strengthening its operational capabilities and safeguarding Nigeria’s borders while fostering trade and economic growth through innovative solutions and strategic partnerships.
