Customs Partners National Sports Commission To Host African Volleyball Championship

As part of efforts to promote sports development and youth engagement in Nigeria, the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, has sought the support of the National Sports Commission to host the African Volleyball Inter-Club Women’s Championship.

During a courtesy visit to the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, on Monday, January 27, 2025, CGC Adeniyi reaffirmed the Nigeria Customs Service’s (NCS) commitment to using sports as a tool for national unity, youth empowerment, and international recognition.

The CGC expressed confidence in the country’s sports revival under the Commission’s leadership and highlighted the significance of the championship, scheduled to take place in Abuja from April 1 to 14, 2025. He noted that the event would attract top volleyball teams from across Africa and provide a platform to showcase Nigeria’s growing sports profile.

“For the first time in a long time, we have tested and accomplished professionals driving sports development in Nigeria. We have no doubt that the glory days of sports are back,” CGC Adeniyi remarked.

He disclosed that the Nigerian Olympic Committee had granted the NCS the hosting rights to organize the tournament in collaboration with the Nigerian Volleyball Federation. He further assured that the Customs Service would work tirelessly to ensure a successful and memorable championship.

In response, the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, praised the Customs Service’s initiative, describing it as a significant step toward repositioning Nigeria as a major player in international sports.

“This championship is not just an opportunity to showcase our athletes but also a platform to inspire young Nigerians and demonstrate our organisational capabilities to the world. Sports are a unifying force, and we will work to ensure that this event reflects the best of what Nigeria can offer,” Dikko stated.

He pledged the Commission’s full support, including access to facilities, technical expertise, and logistical assistance, to ensure the championship meets global standards.

Similarly, the President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Engr. Habu Gumel, commended CGC Adeniyi for integrating sports into the Customs Service’s culture and affirmed his commitment to the tournament’s success.

“We must be deliberate in our preparations and ensure that this championship becomes a springboard for hosting more international tournaments. The National Sports Commission is fully committed to providing all necessary support,” Gumel said.
