The successful implementation of nighttime operations at Tin-Can Island Port (TCIP) has spurred the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to extend this initiative to seaports across the nation.

During a recent address to officers at the TCIP Command, Comptroller Dera Nnadi mni announced plans to introduce 24-hour port operations nationwide, following the positive outcomes observed during the pilot program.

Comptroller Nnadi commended the dedication and exemplary performance of TCIP officers, highlighting their role in surpassing the first quarter revenue targets by an impressive 139%. He emphasized the collective effort of the officers in achieving this success and acknowledged their sacrifices in maintaining high standards of service.

The decision to replicate nighttime operations at all port commands was made following discussions between the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi MFR, and the Managing Director of NPA, Mr. Mohammed Bello-Koko, along with other port stakeholders.

In addition to extending operational hours, Customs officials and freight forwarders have been urged to participate actively in Time Release Studies (TRS). These studies aim to assess and improve the efficiency of cargo clearance processes by collecting data on various timelines involved.

Addressing concerns about data collection, Comptroller Nnadi emphasized the importance of meticulous reporting and announced the deployment of corpers to assist in survey questionnaires. He outlined key aspects of cargo clearance to be documented, including vessel arrival times, examination durations, release processes, and port exit times.

During the parade, awards were presented to exemplary officers and high-performing units at the TCIP Command, recognizing their contributions to the first quarter’s success. Comptroller Nnadi reiterated the importance of parades as a means of maintaining discipline, fostering fitness among officers, and facilitating communication within the command.

Looking ahead, the focus remains on revenue maximization and creating a conducive environment for ongoing Time Release Studies. Comptroller Nnadi emphasized the commitment to enhancing operational efficiency for the benefit of stakeholders and ensuring continued success in the coming quarters.
