Customs Intercepts Bulletproof Jackets, Expired Drugs, Indian Hemp In Major Operation

In a significant operation aimed at safeguarding national security and public health, the Federal Operations Unit Zone A, led by Comptroller Kola Oladeji, has intercepted and seized a large cache of dangerous and illegal goods. The haul includes 1,500 pieces of bulletproof jackets, 989 kg of Indian Hemp (Cannabis Sativa), and 5,229 cartons of expired drugs.

During a media briefing held today, Comptroller Oladeji addressed members of the press, emphasizing the critical nature of the seizures and the ongoing efforts of the Federal Government to protect the country’s security and economic interests. “Security is the bedrock of Nigeria’s economy,” Oladeji stated, highlighting the government’s commitment to achieving sustainable growth and enhancing the quality of life for all citizens.

The intercepted goods were confiscated during a series of operations across various locations within the South-Western states. These operations are part of a broader initiative to curb the illegal importation and distribution of harmful products.

Oladeji underscored the severe health risks associated with the consumption of expired drugs, which can damage the kidneys and liver, cause allergies, and lower immunity. He also highlighted the dangers posed by the misuse of illicit drugs, which can lead to mental health issues and criminal behavior.

The importation of military wares, including bulletproof jackets, is strictly regulated under Schedule Four of the Customs Common External Tariff (CET). Such items require an End-User Certificate (EUC), which ensures that controlled items are used lawfully within Nigeria and are not transferred or re-exported without prior consent from the Office of the National Security Adviser.

In addition to the recent seizures, the Unit also confiscated the following items in June:

– 343,750 liters of premium motor spirit (PMS)
– 7,150 bags of foreign parboiled rice (50 kg each)
– 32 units of used motor vehicles
– 120 bags of sugar (50 kg each)
– 3,560 cartons of poultry products

Four suspects were apprehended in connection with various offenses, including violating import/export guidelines, smuggling, and contravening policy directives. The cumulative duty paid value of the intercepted goods is N3,636,594,600. Furthermore, the Unit recovered N62,017,875.82 in revenue through meticulous checks and the issuance of Demand Notices on consignments that had underpaid customs duties.

Comptroller Oladeji called on all patriotic citizens to provide timely information that could lead to the arrest of those involved in the illegal importation of military wares, illicit drugs, and counterfeit goods. He also urged importers and licensed agents to make sincere declarations and adhere to existing guidelines to avoid losing their goods.

The Federal Operations Unit Zone A continues to work diligently to protect Nigeria’s borders and ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens.
