In a recent announcement on Monday, the Nigeria Customs Service reported a successful interception of over 100 luxurious vehicles, including various models of Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs).
Out of these, 38 vehicles have been seized and forfeited to the Federal Government.
The Service called for collaboration from all stakeholders to join forces with their officers and personnel in order to effectively combat the ongoing issue of vehicle smuggling into the country.
Providing updates on the achievements of his team during the quarter, the Deputy Comptroller of Customs and Coordinator of the Rapid Response Squad Headquarters, Jack Okpabi, issued a statement in Abuja, highlighting the recent operation carried out by the NCS, resulting in the interception of more than 100 vehicles, such as Toyota Hilux, Toyota Landcruiser, and other high-end models.
The successful operation prevented a substantial loss of revenue for the country.
Okpabi stated, “As you can see, we have seized over 100 vehicles, with 38 of them now forfeited to the Federal Government. This operation will result in the recovery of over N400m through demand notices.”
Expressing his disappointment with individuals who continue to engage in smuggling vehicles into Nigeria, the customs officer questioned the motivations behind such actions and the support received by smugglers. He further emphasized that the Nigeria Customs Service remains committed to apprehending and prosecuting any offenders involved in vehicle smuggling.
