The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) announced its commitment to enhance national border security and facilitate trade through advanced technological measures.
This declaration was made by Comptroller-General of Customs Bashir Adewale Adeniyi during a meeting on July 30, 2024, with the Defence Research and Development Bureau (DRDB) delegation led by Director-General Major General Emmanuel Ndagi.
During the meeting at the NCS headquarters, CGC Adeniyi emphasized the importance of incorporating cutting-edge technology in customs operations to bolster national security and drive economic growth. “I see a lot of possibilities that will continue to evolve between the Nigeria Customs Service and DRDB in the area of technology because we live in the age of technology now,” said Adeniyi. He stressed the need for continuous engagement in technological development programs, noting that neglecting research and advancements could jeopardize the organization’s future.
Adeniyi highlighted specific technological initiatives, such as using geospatial intelligence to combat border crimes and establishing a dedicated special intelligence structure. He also mentioned the NCS Command and Staff College’s role in conducting periodic research and operations.
Major General Ndagi outlined the Bureau’s activities and sought collaboration with NCS, identifying key areas for partnership to strengthen border security. “Addressing these challenges with compassion and jointly developing technologies that address border security concerns will help us to fortify our border areas,” said Ndagi. He expressed optimism that the alliance would enable coordinated operations at border areas nationwide.
The meeting concluded with a mutual agreement to pursue joint technological initiatives to enhance border security and facilitate trade, reflecting a strategic move to adapt to the evolving security landscape.
