Customs Comptrollers Laud CG Adeniyi’s Leadership For Revenue Growth, Transformation

Customs Comptrollers at the nation’s major ports have praised the leadership of Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, for his exemplary guidance that has led to remarkable improvements in revenue generation, blocking revenue leakages, and preventing economic sabotage within the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS).

In a recent briefing, the Customs Area Controllers (CACs) for Tin-Can Island Port and Apapa Port, Comptroller Dera Nnadi, mni and Comptroller Babatunde Olomu respectively, commended CG Adeniyi for equipping them with the tools and support needed to enhance their performance, which has significantly contributed to the nation’s economic growth.

Compt. Nnadi, in his address to the press, highlighted that the successful implementation of strategic programs and the introduction of innovative ideas under CG Adeniyi’s leadership were key in curbing revenue leakages and improving the NCS’s revenue generation efforts. He noted that these accomplishments were made possible by the clear direction set by CG Adeniyi, ensuring that officers were trained to detect fraudulent practices and preventing harmful imports from entering the country.

“We have achieved our revenue targets, and even surpassed them, because the CG ensured we had the necessary tools and knowledge to perform our duties effectively,” Compt. Nnadi said. He emphasized that the strategic programs introduced, such as the review of valuation principles and trade facilitation initiatives, have led to a significant increase in compliance by importers, further boosting government revenues.

The CAC for Tin-Can Island Port revealed that his command had made significant strides in preventing the smuggling of drugs and pharmaceuticals, particularly during the last quarter of 2024. He also noted that these successes were a direct result of the proactive measures implemented by CG Adeniyi, which created a conducive environment for Customs officers to excel.

The role of the Federal Government in improving port infrastructure, according to Compt. Nnadi, has also played a significant part in enhancing revenue generation, as improved access to the ports has facilitated smoother operations.

In response to a question about the factors driving the rise in revenue despite a challenging economic climate, Compt. Nnadi attributed the success to CG Adeniyi’s strategy of equipping officers with the necessary training, resources, and support to tackle the evolving challenges of economic sabotage and smuggling.

Compt. Olomu, while also addressing the press, revealed that his command at Apapa Port had collected more than N1.8 trillion in revenue for the Federal Government. He praised CG Adeniyi for creating a supportive environment for officers, including regular training, promotions, and welfare initiatives that have motivated officers to perform optimally. He urged the NCS officers to continue their hard work and maintain their focus on sustaining the country’s economy.

In addition to the revenue achievements, Compt. Nnadi proudly announced that his command had intercepted significant shipments of illicit drugs and banned pharmaceuticals, which were subsequently forfeited to the government. The efforts of the NCS in curbing drug smuggling were also commended by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), with NDLEA Area Commander M.J. Ofoyejo praising the collaboration between the agencies.

During the press briefing, maritime stakeholders applauded the NCS for its performance, especially in light of the economic challenges facing the nation. The Workers Union representatives also paid tribute to Compt. Nnadi for fostering a harmonious working relationship between management and employees, contributing to the smooth operation of port activities.

With a combined revenue of over N2.9 trillion generated by the Tin-Can Island and Apapa Port Commands for the Federal Government, the achievements were hailed as a testament to the efficiency and dedication of the NCS under the leadership of CG Adewale Adeniyi. The workers concluded the ceremony with a shout of “Gboza, gboza, gboza!” in celebration of the impressive revenue results and the positive working environment cultivated by the Customs leadership.
