In a historic and unanimous decision, Nigerian Maritime Journalists (NMJ) are set to honour the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, with the prestigious title of “Iconic Maritime Personality of the Year 2024.”

The award, which is scheduled to take place on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at the Apapa Port Customs Command Auditorium, is a landmark event as it marks the first time all maritime journalists and their respective associations will jointly recognize a single individual for exceptional contributions to the maritime sector.

The initiative is supported by leading maritime journalist groups, including the Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN), League of Maritime Editors (LOME), Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON), Maritime Journalists Association of Nigeria (MAJAN), Shipping Correspondents Association of Nigeria (SCAN), Online Maritime Media Association of Nigeria (OMMAN), and the Congress of Maritime Media Practitioners (CONMMEP).

According to Mr. Innocent Orok, Secretary of the Award Planning Committee, the decision to honour CG Adeniyi reflects his remarkable achievements since assuming office. In a nomination letter addressed to the CG, Orok highlighted Adeniyi’s transformative leadership, which has repositioned the Nigeria Customs Service across multiple areas, including revenue collection, anti-smuggling operations, trade facilitation, national security, staff welfare, inter-agency collaboration, and ICT modernization.

Orok remarked, “Your record-breaking performance has attracted national and international recognition, including the recent Public Service Personality of the Year award by Leadership Newspaper Group. As maritime journalists, we are proud to join this history-making moment by acknowledging your outstanding service.”

Dele Aderibigbe, Chairman of the Award Planning Committee, described the event as symbolic and timely, aligning with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. “This honour underscores the maritime media’s commitment to spotlighting exemplary leadership and performance. Under CG Adeniyi, the Customs Service has become a model of professionalism and patriotism, excelling in revenue generation, anti-smuggling initiatives, and inter-agency cooperation,” Aderibigbe stated.

He further emphasized that this award also sets an agenda for other government agencies and leaders to strive for excellence, as the vibrant maritime media continue to monitor and report their activities.

The event is expected to attract high-profile guests, including agency heads, maritime stakeholders, and dignitaries, celebrating CG Adeniyi’s unparalleled contributions to Nigeria’s maritime sector.

The public is invited to join this remarkable event at 12:00 PM on the scheduled date.
