The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, has been commended for his role in convincing the Federal Government to suspend the implementation of the 4% Free-on-Board (FOB) value on imports into the country.
The commendation came during the presentation of the Iconic Maritime Personality of the Year 2024 award to Adeniyi by Nigerian Maritime Journalists in Lagos on Thursday. Speaking at the event, a Maritime Icon and former National President of the Association of Nigeria Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), Prince Olayiwola Shittu JP, described the suspension as a major relief for importers and Customs agents.
Shittu, who Chaired the occasion, referred to Adeniyi as both the Comptroller General of Customs and the “CG of Licensed Customs Agents and Freight Forwarders.” He praised Adeniyi for his longstanding support and guidance, recalling his contributions during his tenure as ANLCA President. He also congratulated him on the well-deserved recognition by Maritime Journalists, who he described as the watchdogs of the industry.
The Chairman of the Customs Consultative Council, Alhaji Hakeem Olanrewaju, also praised Adeniyi’s leadership qualities and congratulated him on being recognized by the Maritime Press. Olanrewaju urged Licensed Customs Agents to embrace the changing dynamics in the industry and adapt accordingly.
Similarly, the Vice President of ANLCA, Prince Olusegun Oduntan, lauded Adeniyi for his grassroots leadership approach, which he said has brought positive change to the sector. He assured that ANLCA would continue to collaborate with the NCS under Adeniyi’s leadership.
The National President of the Africa Association of Professional Freight Forwarders and Logistics of Nigeria (APFFLON), Otunba Frank Ogunojemite, described Adeniyi as a Natural Leader. He shared personal memories of their time together at the University, where Adeniyi served as class captain and later as Department President. Ogunojemite highlighted his humility and patriotism, noting that he maintains close relationships with old friends despite his high-ranking position.
Representing the Maritime Journalists, Mr. Okey Ibeke praised Adeniyi for his outstanding performance, which he said has transformed Customs operations. He highlighted the CGC’s achievements in revenue collection, anti-smuggling efforts, and trade facilitation.
Ibeke emphasized that this was the first time Journalists from different Media Houses covering the sector had unanimously agreed to honour a Chief Executive Officer. He clarified that the recognition was not an act of sycophancy but a tribute to a leader who has significantly impacted the industry.
He further stated that President Bola Tinubu must have seen exceptional leadership qualities in Adeniyi before appointing him as CGC, adding that he has not disappointed the President.
Beyond recognition, the Journalists called for improved welfare and political support for the Nigeria Customs Service to enhance its operational effectiveness. Ibeke stressed that Customs plays a critical role in national economic development and urged the Federal Government to strengthen the Service with the necessary resources and authority to execute its mandate efficiently.
