The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, has continued his engagement with strategic stakeholders to enhance security in the state. As part of these efforts, he paid a familiarization visit to the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu, and his management team.

During the visit on February 26, 2025, Orutugu proposed the establishment of a police post at Ifite-Awka on land donated by the university’s management. He explained that the initiative aims to curb criminal activities, provide a faster response to emergencies, and ensure a safer environment for students, faculty, and residents in the Ifite and Amansea axis.

The police commissioner, who was accompanied by Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Moses Gana, and Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, James Ihiabe, noted that the move is necessary given the security challenges that have historically affected the university community.

He further emphasized that the police command seeks to gather intelligence to refine policing strategies, enhance community trust and confidence in law enforcement, leverage resources and expertise to support police operations, and develop joint initiatives to address pressing security concerns.

In response, Ikechebelu, speaking on behalf of the university management, commended the police for their commitment to security. He expressed confidence in Orutugu’s leadership and ability to tackle crime, particularly within the university environment.

The visit is part of the commissioner’s broader strategy to foster collaboration between law enforcement and key stakeholders in Anambra State, ensuring a safer and more secure learning environment.
