CP Itam Reports 200 Arrests, 5 Convictions, And Seizure of Arms In Anambra

On the 12th of July 2024, the Commissioner of Police for Anambra State, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, held his maiden press briefing at the Anambra State Police Command Headquarters in Awka. Addressing the gathering, CP Nnaghe expressed gratitude to the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD NPM, for the opportunity to serve at this critical juncture in the state’s history.

In his detailed update on the command’s activities since assuming office 60 days ago, CP Nnaghe highlighted significant achievements in the fight against crime. He reported that over 200 suspects had been apprehended for various offenses, leading to the successful prosecution of five individuals with ongoing trials for others. The commissioner emphasized the command’s dedication to ensuring justice for victims and accountability for offenders.

The briefing underscored the police’s efforts in curbing criminal activities, including the rescue of four kidnapped victims unharmed and the recovery of 33 different types of arms, including AK47 rifles, pump-action guns, and locally made pistols. Additionally, the command seized over 1,644 ammunition units, recovered 27 stolen vehicles, various motorcycles, and substantial sums of money linked to ongoing investigations.

CP Nnaghe highlighted the importance of ongoing training programs aimed at enhancing operational proficiency among officers and improving crime prevention strategies. He noted that the command had organized a security summit involving vigilante groups, hunters, and other local security outfits to foster a more inclusive policing approach.

In his remarks, the commissioner acknowledged the support of Governor Prof Chukwuma Soludo CFR in bolstering security efforts despite existing challenges. He also mentioned upcoming initiatives, including the unveiling of the “Anambra State Police Community Policing Model,” aimed at strengthening community relations and enhancing public trust in law enforcement.

Furthermore, CP Nnaghe addressed concerns over professional misconduct within the force, announcing the reactivation of the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) to investigate allegations and enforce ethical standards among officers.

The commissioner concluded by urging the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies during the forthcoming local government elections, emphasizing the need for peaceful conduct and adherence to electoral laws.

In closing, CP Nnaghe reiterated the command’s commitment to maintaining law and order in Anambra State and called for continued support from the media and stakeholders in achieving these objectives.
