The Anambra State Police Command has launched an intensive manhunt for armed men responsible for a deadly abduction and subsequent shootout that resulted in the deaths of a vigilante operative and two civilians. The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The incident began at 1:30 pm yesterday, June 17, when a citizen was abducted by assailants operating in a red Highlander jeep in Nnewi. The armed men were pursued by security operatives to Nnobi, where a gun battle ensued. Tragically, one of the security operatives was fatally wounded during the exchange.
In their attempt to flee, the assailants indiscriminately opened fire, resulting in the deaths of two innocent bystanders. Police teams at the scene promptly recovered the victims and transported them to the hospital. Unfortunately, three individuals, including a 22-year-old woman, were pronounced dead by doctors, while two others remain in critical condition and are receiving medical treatment.
CP Itam condemned the heinous act, describing the killers as “cowards who have murdered sleep.” He extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and praised the fallen vigilante for their bravery. The Commissioner has appealed to the public, especially eyewitnesses, to provide any information that could aid in the ongoing investigation and manhunt.
