The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has taken a decisive step in combating financial crimes and ensuring national security by establishing the Police Anti-Money Laundering Units across Nigeria. These units, which will operate within the State Criminal Investigation Departments (SCIDs), are designed to counter the sophisticated methods used by criminal networks to finance terrorism and other illicit activities. The initiative, led by Chief Superintendents of Police (CSPs) under the supervision of Commissioner of Police Hyacinth Azuka Edozie, a renowned financial expert, underscores the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to safeguarding the country’s economic and security landscape.
As part of these efforts, the Police have made significant progress in cracking down on financial crimes, with notable arrests in Kano and Nasarawa States. On December 8, 2024, operatives in Gwale, Kano, acting on credible intelligence, arrested Nura Ibrahim and uncovered counterfeit currencies worth a staggering N129.5 billion. The discovery included $3,366,000 in counterfeit US dollars, 51,970 counterfeit CFA francs, and N1,443,000 in counterfeit Naira. Further investigations led to the arrest of two accomplices, Muhammed Muntari and Usman Abdullahi, believed to be members of a larger criminal syndicate.
Similarly, on January 13, 2025, in New Karu, Nasarawa State, the Police apprehended 53-year-old Ephraim Barde in possession of counterfeit U.S. dollar notes totaling $160,000. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of Barde’s involvement and identify any other collaborators.
The establishment of the Anti-Money Laundering Units is a strategic move to bolster the Nigeria Police Force’s operational capacity in addressing terrorism financing and economic sabotage, in collaboration with the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU). This initiative aligns with global best practices in combating financial crimes and mitigating security threats.
The IGP has called on all Nigerians to actively support the fight against financial crimes by reporting suspicious activities involving counterfeit currency and other illicit operations. He stressed that ensuring a stable and secure financial system is a shared responsibility that requires public vigilance.
Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s dedication to preventing financial crimes and promoting national security, emphasizing that the establishment of the Anti-Money Laundering Units is a vital step toward dismantling criminal networks and maintaining the country’s economic integrity. The Police remain resolute in their efforts to create a secure environment for all Nigerians and residents.
