The Congress of Nigerian Maritime Media Practitioners (CONMMEP) has commended the Customs Area Controller (CAC) of the Tin-Can Island Port Command, Comptroller Frank Okechukwu Onyeka, for his remarkable leadership and contributions to the Nigeria Customs Service. The commendation came during a courtesy visit by the association’s executive committee to the command on Thursday.
Led by its outgoing President, Alhaji Tunde Umar-Daniah, the nine-member delegation was received at the newly renovated conference room of the Command. The meeting began with the formal introduction of both parties and progressed into a reflective and forward-looking dialogue on maritime operations and collaboration.
In his remarks, Alhaji Umar-Daniah extolled Comptroller Onyeka’s track record in various commands, particularly highlighting his stellar performance as a valuation officer at Tin-Can Island Port and his recognition as the first recipient of the Officer of the Month award under Comptroller Imam Baba at Onne Port. He also recalled Onyeka’s impactful role at the Apapa Port Command, where his efforts contributed significantly to the Command’s revenue generation milestones.
The CONMMEP president applauded the collective achievements of officers under Comptroller Onyeka’s leadership, particularly the impressive revenue performance over the past three months. He also acknowledged the CAC’s inclusive leadership style, especially his stakeholder engagement initiatives, such as hosting Muslim stakeholders for Iftar during Ramadan.
Highlighting the purpose of the visit, Alhaji Umar-Daniah emphasized the association’s commitment to partnering with the Command to achieve its mandate as outlined in the Nigeria Customs Act 2023. He expressed CONMMEP’s readiness to sign a cooperation agreement with the Command, pledging continued support in areas of advocacy and public enlightenment.
He also shed light on the association’s recent activities, including a workshop themed “Port Community Engagement: Building Sustainable Development”, and the upcoming Annual General Meeting, which features a training component. He appealed for the Command’s support towards the success of the planned initiatives.
In his response, Comptroller Onyeka expressed appreciation for the visit and the association’s consistent professionalism. He disclosed that the Command generated a total of ₦347.9 billion in revenue between January and March 2025 — a significant increase from the ₦304 billion recorded in the same period in 2024.
Comptroller Onyeka praised CONMMEP for their objective reportage and unwavering support, noting that the association was the first media group to be received in the newly renovated conference room. He assured the group of continued cooperation, stating, “I am so appreciative of all the support that I have been getting so far from your association, but like Oliver Twist, I shall continue to ask for more of it.”
The meeting ended on a high note, with mutual assurances of sustained collaboration between the media practitioners and the Customs Command to further enhance maritime operations and public communication.
