A fresh wave of redeployments recently approved by the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service has triggered major movements among senior officers, particularly within the Enforcement units of the Federal Operations Units (FOU) in Zones ‘A’ (Ikeja) and ‘B’ (Kaduna).
Comptroller Ahmadu Bello Shuaibu, a seasoned anti-smuggling czar, has been appointed Comptroller in charge of Enforcement at the Customs Headquarters, Abuja. Shuaibu, who previously led the FOU Zone B, Kaduna, and the Idiroko Command, is widely celebrated for his decisive role in the anti-smuggling war.
Notably, while serving as Coordinator of the Comptroller General’s Strike Force in Lagos, Shuaibu oversaw the largest single seizure of pangolin scales in the country—valued at several billions of naira—underscoring his reputation as a formidable enforcer of the Customs mandate.
His redeployment, which he personally confirmed, has been received with mixed reactions. Many observers expressed surprise, given the tremendous success recorded under his leadership in recent years. However, Comptroller Shuaibu remains undeterred. In a recent conversation held nearly a month ago, he hinted at the possibility of his redeployment, stating that his handover notes were already being updated.
“I am updating my handover documents with today’s activities,” he said, underscoring his preparedness and commitment to seamless transitions. Known for his humility and dedication, Shuaibu is often described as someone who sees every assignment as divinely ordained.
In stark contrast, developments at the FOU Zone A, Ikeja, appear slower. The outgoing officer is reportedly still compiling a one-year data/seizure profile—two weeks after the redeployment directive was issued. However, it has been gathered that Comptrollers Muhammed Shuaibu and Oladeji have agreed to a tentative handover, expected to take place between tomorrow and Thursday.
Meanwhile, Comptroller Alkali is set to assume office as the new head of FOU Zone B, Kaduna, replacing Comptroller Shuaibu. Alkali, known for his discipline and operational experience, previously served as a Coordinator of the Comptroller General’s Squad and most recently held command at Onne, Rivers State. His redeployment to Kaduna is seen as a strategic move to further strengthen enforcement activities in the region.
The redeployments are part of broader efforts by the Customs management to reposition key units for enhanced operational efficiency and enforcement impact.
