The CLEEN Foundation organized a significant peace walk rally on October 8, 2024, in Makurdi, Benue State, to commemorate the International Day of Peace. This event attracted a diverse group of participants, with 70 individuals—26 males and 44 females—representing various sectors committed to fostering peace, unity, and harmony within the community.
The rally commenced at the Savannah roundabout and proceeded to the Pauline Makka Women Development Centre, symbolizing a collective journey toward peace. This year’s event emphasized the vital role of women in peacebuilding, highlighting their contributions to conflict prevention and resolution.
International Day of Peace is observed globally on September 21 and serves as a reminder to strengthen the ideals of peace among nations and peoples. The objectives of this year’s event were to raise awareness about the importance of peace and individuals’ roles in promoting it within their communities, advocate for peaceful coexistence and conflict resolution, and encourage active community engagement to foster understanding among diverse groups.
Participants proudly displayed placards advocating for peace and distributed stickers promoting harmony. To maintain a safe environment, members of the Nigeria Police Force assisted with crowd control, accompanied by the Royal Brass Band, which added a festive atmosphere to the rally.
Dr. Victoria Daaor, the assistant coordinator of the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) Mediators in Benue, expressed gratitude to all participants and underscored the importance of women’s involvement in peace initiatives. She encouraged everyone to integrate principles of peace into their daily lives and called for women’s representation in decision-making forums.
Chief Ihwakar Justine Terseer, representing traditional leaders, affirmed their commitment to cultivating a culture of peace in the community. He urged collective responsibility in fostering peace. Mr. Nathaniel Awuapila, coordinator of the HeForShe Network, highlighted the suffering of women and children in conflicts and advocated for collaborative approaches to peacebuilding.
Mrs. Magdalene Andor, the Director of Women’s Affairs, reinforced the necessity of acknowledging women’s pivotal role in achieving peace and promoting justice and equality in society. Dr. Gabriel Akinremi called for a united effort in fostering peace, emphasizing that everyone has a role to play in creating a harmonious society.
Following the rally, the HeForShe Network, Women Mediators, and Media Network inaugurated Peace Clubs at two secondary schools: Makurdi International Secondary School and Government Model Secondary School. This initiative aims to engage students as ambassadors for peace and encourage a culture of peace within their schools and communities.
The peace walk resulted in several commitments. The women coordinators pledged to enhance advocacy efforts to create a peace-enabling environment in Benue State. The Media Network agreed to continue promoting awareness of women’s roles in peacebuilding, while traditional leaders committed to supporting dialogue and activities that foster peace and security.
While the event was largely successful, it faced challenges, including the absence of school principals during the inauguration of Peace Clubs. Participants agreed that peacebuilding is an ongoing process requiring sustained commitment and collaboration. Future initiatives should focus on continuous advocacy and sensitization efforts.
The Peace Walk Rally in Makurdi served as a powerful reminder of the community’s collective commitment to peace. As participants move forward, they carry with them the belief that with passion, purpose, and collaboration, a peaceful future is possible for all.
