The activities in the dams that have resulted in the destruction of homes and sources of income, according to Niger State Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, have caused unspeakable hardship in the communities that surround the state’s electricity-generating dams.
Bello made this statement on Wednesday in Minna, the capital of Niger State, at the official commissioning of the Hydro Power Producing Area Development Commission (HYPADEC) headquarters and the unveiling of functioning cars.
He said having an official operational office would provide a conducive environment for the effective coordination and administrative activities of the commission.
Gov Bello charged the commission to bring succour to the affected communities that have continued to suffer the effects of flooding as a result of hydroelectricity generation activities.
Earlier, the managing director of the commission, Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa, said that the power-generating businesses were not upholding their obligation to give 10% of their earnings to the commission as required by the law that formed the commission.
In addition to providing infrastructure in the flood-affected villages, he claimed that more than 5,000 youngsters from HYPPADEC communities throughout six states had received entrepreneur training.
