The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has awarded a ₦500,000 scholarship to Miss Mariam Olayiwola, a first-year Physiology student at Lagos State University. This gesture comes under the COAS Special Scholarship Scheme for Indigent Students for 2024, aimed at fostering educational development and supporting academically promising but financially challenged students.
The scholarship cheque was presented to Mariam by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division Nigerian Army, Major General Farouk Mijinyawa, on behalf of the COAS. Major General Mijinyawa praised the recipient for her hard work and academic accomplishments, urging her to maintain her dedication and serve as a role model to her peers and siblings. He emphasized the Nigerian Army’s commitment to community welfare and its efforts to provide opportunities for young Nigerians with exceptional potential.
Mrs. Olayiwola, Mariam’s mother, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Nigerian Army for the scholarship, noting its significance in securing a brighter future for her daughter. She highlighted the importance of education in empowering the girl child and easing her family’s financial burden.
The scholarship covers tuition fees and other academic expenses, enabling Mariam to focus on her studies without financial stress. Initiated by the late COAS, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the scholarship programme reflects the Nigerian Army’s dedication to educational advancement and societal development.
Through initiatives like this, the Nigerian Army continues to demonstrate its commitment to supporting education and empowering young Nigerians to achieve their academic dreams.
