CLEEN Foundation Calls For Acceleration of ‘Reserved Seats Bill’ on International Women’s Day

As the world marks International Women’s Day, CLEEN Foundation has called for urgent legislative action to accelerate the passage of the Reserved Seats Bill (Bill HB1349) to enhance women’s political representation in Nigeria.

The foundation made this appeal during a high-level policy dialogue focused on “Accelerating Action on Women’s Socio-Economic Empowerment and Political Representation – Challenges, Opportunities & Way Forward.” The event underscored the need for proactive measures to address gender-based injustices, discrimination, and the underrepresentation of women in governance.

The Reserved Seats Bill, currently before the 10th Assembly, seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to create reserved seats for women in the National and State Houses of Assembly. CLEEN Foundation noted that similar bills faced setbacks in previous assemblies and urged lawmakers to demonstrate the political will to push through this critical legislation.

In a related development, the organization addressed recent allegations of sexual exploitation involving Senator Natasha Akpoti, which have sparked national conversations on gender-based violence. CLEEN Foundation emphasized the need for systemic change, accountability, and justice, calling on Senate leaders, the Executive, the Judiciary, traditional and religious leaders to reinforce policies that protect women from exploitation and harassment.

The foundation stressed that women should not be scapegoated for speaking out against sexual harassment and that all allegations must be thoroughly, impartially, and transparently investigated. It further called for stricter measures against perpetrators, improved support systems for victims, and greater efforts to elevate women into leadership positions.

CLEEN Foundation also highlighted the role of education and awareness in addressing gender-based injustices, urging investment in initiatives that challenge stereotypes and empower women and girls. The organization called on men and boys to be active allies in promoting equity and respect.

As the world observes International Women’s Day, CLEEN Foundation reiterated the urgency of accelerating action against all forms of gender-based exploitation, stressing that achieving equality is a societal imperative.

“Let us stand united in action, demonstrating that the time for change is now,” the statement concluded.
