CISLAC Condemns Arrest of Kano Anti-Graft Chair, Urges Police To Resist Political Interference

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has strongly criticized the arrest and subsequent release of Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado, Executive Chairman of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC), by officers from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Monitoring Unit.

In a statement issued by CISLAC’s Executive Director, Comrade Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, the organization described the arrest as a blatant example of “corruption fighting back,” warning that such actions undermine Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts and erode public confidence in state institutions.

Rimingado was reportedly detained on Friday evening over the seizure of properties allegedly linked to a prominent national figure within the All Progressives Congress (APC). The properties are believed to be proceeds of crime, and the seizure followed investigations and legal actions carried out by the Kano Anti-Graft Agency under its enabling law and a court order.

Although Rimingado was released on bail the same night, he has been directed to report to the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Monday for further questioning.

Rafsanjani condemned the circumstances surrounding the arrest, stating, “The Inspector General of Police must not allow his office to be used by desperate politicians to undermine anti-corruption efforts or shield powerful individuals from legitimate investigations. Actions like these tarnish the police force’s reputation and damage public trust in the impartiality of law enforcement.”

He further warned that political interference in the anti-corruption process jeopardizes Nigeria’s global image, discourages international investors, and undermines the administration of President Bola Tinubu, which has pledged a commitment to transparency and accountability.

CISLAC concluded by urging the Inspector General of Police to resist political manipulation and prioritize justice, ensuring that the integrity of Nigeria’s anti-corruption framework remains intact.

The statement, signed by Rafsanjani, reiterated the importance of shielding law enforcement agencies from undue political influence to uphold the rule of law and sustain Nigeria’s anti-corruption agenda.
