CISLAC Commends President Tinubu For Releasing Detained Minors, Calls For Justice, Security Reforms

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has praised President Bola Tinubu for directing the Attorney General, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), to expedite the release of minors detained during the #EndBadGovernance protests across Nigeria. Announced by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the directive highlights the President’s commitment to reuniting these young detainees with their families.

In a statement signed by CISLAC Executive Director, Comrade Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, the organization expressed appreciation for the President’s decision and urged further action. CISLAC called on the government to investigate the circumstances that led to the arrests and to hold accountable any security personnel involved in wrongful detentions. The organization also recommended extending this release order to other detained protesters as a step towards promoting national unity and healing.

Rafsanjani outlined key reforms CISLAC believes are essential to Nigeria’s progress, including judicial and police reform. Emphasizing the need to address corruption within the judiciary, CISLAC argued that only judges with integrity should serve on Nigeria’s benches to restore public trust and attract foreign investment. “A reformed judiciary strengthens democracy and upholds the rule of law, which investors view as vital for business,” CISLAC said, warning that collaboration between corrupt officials and judges undermines justice.

CISLAC also stressed police reform, calling for a transparent, merit-based recruitment system to build a force that serves responsibly. The organization highlighted ongoing issues with police brutality and corruption, suggesting that by removing corrupt individuals and improving welfare, training, and retirement benefits, Nigeria could foster a more trusted police force. “A well-structured police force can bridge the gap between citizens and law enforcement, essential for national security,” CISLAC added.

Further commending the President’s directive to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to facilitate the rehabilitation of released minors, CISLAC noted this step reflects compassionate leadership toward humanitarian concerns.

CISLAC also emphasized empowering the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to engage citizens through civic education and promote active participation. The organization believes that an informed, engaged citizenry is pivotal for Nigeria’s progress.

Reflecting on President Tinubu’s earlier pledge to engage Nigerian youth in dialogue about their concerns, CISLAC encouraged swift establishment of dialogue structures. “The President must rely on impartial advisors to ensure genuine engagement with the youth,” CISLAC stated, warning against the influence of sycophants.

CISLAC concluded by reaffirming its support for initiatives aimed at meaningful reform, justice, and government accountability, urging continued responsiveness to the demands of the Nigerian people.
