CGC Adewale Adeniyi Commissions Newly Renovated Tin-Can Island Port Command Office Complex, Marks Historic Milestone

The Tin-Can Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) celebrated a historic milestone on November 24, 2024, with the commissioning of its newly renovated office complex. The event, attended by key stakeholders, including the Comptroller General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, dsm, fnipr, psc(+), marked a significant transformation for the command, which had not seen major renovations since its establishment in 1977.

In his speech, the Customs Area Controller for Tin-Can Island Port, Dera Nnadi mni, emphasized the importance of the renovation, describing it as more than just an aesthetic upgrade. “This renovation is a clear statement of intent that reinforces the CGC’s policy focus on collaboration, consolidation, and innovation,” Nnadi stated. He highlighted that the newly upgraded facility would foster improved working conditions, enhance operational efficiency, and provide a better environment for both officers and stakeholders.

The renovation is part of the CGC’s broader vision to modernize Customs operations and ensure that the service delivers excellent service, which is crucial for both revenue generation and trade facilitation. Nnadi underscored the economic significance of the Tin Can Island Port, noting that for the first time in history, the port had generated over ₦1.12 trillion in revenue in 2024, a remarkable achievement compared to ₦639.66 billion in 2023. This record-breaking revenue reflects the dedication of the officers and the collaborative efforts with other stakeholders in improving Nigeria’s customs operations.

Apart from the revenue generation, Nnadi commended the command’s continuous efforts in enforcing compliance, particularly with regard to tackling smuggling activities. He pointed out the recent seizures of arms, unregulated pharmaceutical products, and other illicit goods, underlining the commitment of the Nigerian Customs Service to safeguarding the nation’s security and economic integrity.

Acknowledging the collective efforts that made the renovation possible, Nnadi extended his gratitude to the officers at Tin-Can Island Port Command for their unwavering commitment and to the Managing Director of Nigeria Ports Authority and the Port Managers for their ongoing support. He also expressed his deepest appreciation to the CGC for his leadership and vision, which have been crucial in driving the progress seen at the port.

As the newly renovated office complex was unveiled, Nnadi called on all stakeholders, including importers, clearing agents, and shipping companies, to continue their support in maintaining the facility’s high standards. “A clean, safe, and well-maintained office space is essential for the continued success of our operations,” he said, urging everyone to respect the rules and guidelines to sustain the positive atmosphere created by the renovation.

In closing, Nnadi assured the audience that this is only the beginning and encouraged everyone to work together to maintain the standards of excellence that Tin Can Island Port has come to represent. He expressed optimism that the facility would continue to serve as a beacon of progress for many years to come.
