In a bid to foster professionalism and reward exceptional service, the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, hosted the 2024 CGC Excellence Awards Night on Friday, November 29, 2024, in Abuja. The annual event celebrated Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) officers for their outstanding achievements in revenue generation, trade facilitation, and anti-smuggling operations.
The ceremony brought together key stakeholders from the Ministry of Finance, the National Assembly, and law enforcement agencies. Among the dignitaries in attendance were Mr. Olawale Edun, who represented the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy and also serves as the Chairman of the Nigeria Customs Service Board; Senator Isah Jibril, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Customs; Hon. Leke Abejide, Chairman of the House Committee on Customs and Excise; and Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun.
CGC Adeniyi underscored the importance of recognizing excellence within the Service, stating, “This strategic shift springs from our belief that positive reinforcement nurtures a more dynamic, motivated, and high-performing workforce.” He emphasized that the awards signify a departure from focusing solely on punitive measures, marking a new era of encouraging and rewarding exceptional contributions.
Despite challenges such as a 15% revenue deficit carried over from 2023, CGC Adeniyi expressed confidence in the Service’s ability to overcome obstacles and meet its objectives. He urged officers to remain united and committed to the core values of integrity, professionalism, and humanity.
Representing the Honourable Minister, Ali Muhammad, Director of Home Finance, commended CGC Adeniyi’s leadership. He highlighted that celebrating excellence motivates officers and boosts productivity. IGP Egbetokun also praised the synergy between the NCS and the Nigeria Police Force, describing it as vital to enhancing national security.
One of the night’s highlights was the recognition of Assistant Superintendent of Customs, Folusho Adeogun, Liaison Officer of the Nigeria Customs Broadcasting Network (NCBN), among other award recipients.
The event reaffirmed the Nigeria Customs Service’s commitment to cultivating a culture of excellence and professionalism, inspiring officers to continue serving the nation with dedication and pride.
