Capsized Boat Tragedy Along Ibeshe-Ikorodu Channel, 3 Dead, 11 Rescued

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) responded promptly to distress calls regarding a tragic incident involving a passenger boat named Oluwaseyifunmi, which capsized along the Ibeshe-Ikorodu Channel around 7 pm. The boat, carrying 14 people, departed from Addax Jetty and encountered a suspected mechanical fault, leading to its rapid submersion.

Upon arrival at the scene, a combined team of Water Guards, the search and rescue unit of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), and LASEMA responders launched a coordinated effort to manage the situation. The team successfully rescued 11 individuals alive, and they have been transported to the Ibeshe Ferry Terminal for further assistance.

Tragically, three passengers did not survive the incident, and the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) has been tasked with transferring their bodies. An ongoing investigation into the cause of the mishap is being conducted by LASWA to ascertain the factors that led to the boat’s capsizing.

Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the Public Secretary of LASEMA, has assured the public that updates on the incident will be provided as the investigation progresses.
