The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has assured Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, that the federal government will not allow bureaucratic processes to hinder the progress of the Bakassi Deep Seaport project. This assurance was given during a courtesy visit by Governor Otu to the minister’s office on Wednesday.
Oyetola emphasized the strategic importance of the Bakassi Deep Seaport, highlighting its natural depth, which ranges between 17 to 21 meters, as a significant advantage that would reduce the cost of capital dredging. He pointed out that the seaport, once operational, would position Nigeria as a major hub for transshipment in the African region.
“Due to the low draft of our major seaports, many large containers destined for Nigeria are currently being diverted to other African countries. The Bakassi Deep Seaport is a welcome development, and I assure you that we will expedite this project. Bureaucracy will not be a barrier here,” Oyetola stated.
Governor Otu, in his remarks, sought the minister’s collaboration to ensure the successful realization of the Bakassi Deep Seaport under a public-private partnership model. He explained that the project is part of Cross River State’s strategic integrated infrastructure plan, aimed at boosting trade within the region and stimulating economic growth for both the state and the country.
The governor also praised Minister Oyetola for establishing a solid foundation within the ministry, expressing confidence that, given Oyetola’s private sector experience, the Bakassi Deep Seaport project would be a success.
The meeting was also attended by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Oloruntola Olufemi, who joined the minister in receiving the Cross River State delegation.
