AU Peace, Security Council Delegation Visits Western Naval Command, Tours NNS KADA

A delegation from the Military Security Committee (MSC) of the African Union Peace and Security Council (AU-PSC), comprising Defence Attachés and Secretariat Staff, on Monday, May 26, 2025, paid an official visit to the Western Naval Command of the Nigerian Navy and proceeded on a tour of NNS KADA, a sea lift support vessel designated for AU peace support operations.

The visit commenced with a comprehensive briefing by the Commanding Officer of NNS KADA, Captain A. Zidon, who gave an overview of the ship’s capabilities, operational roles, and strategic importance in supporting peacekeeping and humanitarian missions across Africa.

The delegation was later conducted around various sections of the ship, including the galley, mess areas, sick bay, engine rooms, officers’ cabins, bridge, and the Roll-On/Roll-Off (RORO) deck. The tour also featured live demonstrations of the ship’s stern and inner ramps to showcase its capacity for heavy-duty transport and logistics support.

Speaking after the inspection, Brigadier General Abubakar Conteh of Sierra Leone, Chairman of the MSC-AU PSC, commended the professionalism of the Nigerian Navy and expressed satisfaction with the ship’s state of readiness for deployment in any AU-assigned peace support mission.

“We are impressed with what we have seen here today,” he said. “NNS KADA is clearly well-equipped to carry out vital support operations and we are confident in its capacity to contribute meaningfully to Africa’s peace and security architecture.”

The visit is seen as a step forward in strengthening collaboration between the Nigerian Navy and the African Union on maritime peacekeeping and regional security initiatives.
