An alarming incident occurred around 5 PM on Tuesday, May 14, involving soldiers from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit stationed at Epe Barracks. The soldiers, who were in the area conducting surveillance related to a recent kidnapping of a Chinese national, reportedly assaulted a local resident.

The resident, whose identity is being withheld for privacy reasons, reported that a group of soldiers, led by a commander and notably lacking name tags, entered his compound. The soldiers proceeded to search the premises without prior notice or explanation. The incident escalated when one of the soldiers was caught peeping through the resident’s window.

“I was sitting on my verandah when I noticed a soldier peeping through my window. I asked him why he was doing so, and that was it. He assaulted me for asking the question,” the resident stated. He described being slapped and hit on the head and face until he bled, with the assault culminating in the commander ordering a search of his apartment. The resident also reported being threatened with a firearm by the soldier he had questioned.

This incident has raised serious concerns about the conduct of the soldiers and their methods of surveillance and investigation. The resident has expressed a strong desire to seek justice and address the unwarranted violence inflicted upon him.

“I don’t think a simple question like that warrants such a violent act. I want to take this matter up,” he asserted.

The local community and human rights organizations are being urged to look into the incident. The resident is seeking advice on the appropriate steps to take next, including potential legal action against the soldiers involved and ensuring accountability for their actions.

This case highlights ongoing issues with military operations in civilian areas and the need for stringent measures to protect citizens’ rights during such operations. Further developments are expected as investigations continue and as the resident pursues justice for the assault he endured.
