The Acting Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has pledged to reorganize the Nigerian Army and its command structures to strengthen its operational capabilities. Speaking at the closing ceremony of the second Regimental Sergeant Majors’ (RSM) Convention 2024, held at the Nigerian Army School of Finance and Administration (NASFA) in Lagos, General Oluyede outlined his vision for a more effective and disciplined force.

“My vision is to have a good army—a set of troops with good welfare packages that will encourage them to do their job well and secure Nigeria,” he said. He further disclosed plans to implement significant changes in the coming weeks, including the reshuffling of key commanders, to achieve these goals.

Having been actively involved in the army’s security architecture over the past five years, General Oluyede stated his commitment to following proven strategies to address insecurity. “You will expect some rejigging and some reshuffling, and we will move on from there,” he affirmed.

During his address, the Army Chief also emphasized the importance of welfare and discipline among troops, noting that improved conditions would foster greater commitment to safeguarding the nation.

The convention, themed “Fostering Improved Discipline and Regimentation in the Nigerian Army for Enhanced Capacity to Accomplish Constitutional Responsibilities within a Joint Environment,” brought together RSMs, who serve as the custodians of military discipline and operational excellence.

General Oluyede urged the RSMs to apply the knowledge gained during the workshop to their units and to mentor their colleagues effectively. He emphasized their role in mitigating inter-agency crises and combating drug-related issues within the army.

“The RSM must be exemplary and highly responsive in discharging their duties,” he said, encouraging them to cultivate a positive attitude towards their responsibilities.

This year’s convention highlighted the evolving responsibilities of RSMs in addressing Nigeria’s complex security challenges. RSMs, as the backbone of military operations, are critical in maintaining discipline, enforcing standards, and advising commanding officers, bridging the gap between officers and enlisted personnel.

The Acting Chief of Army Staff reaffirmed his commitment to building a disciplined, well-motivated, and efficient Nigerian Army that is equipped to address contemporary security threats while ensuring the welfare of its personnel.
