Amid growing concerns over security in Anambra State, the Anambra Security Network (ASN) has criticized the inadequate remuneration of Anambra Vigilant Group (AVG) operatives and called for immediate improvements. The group also urged the state government and wealthy Anambrarians to enhance support for these crucial security personnel.

In a statement issued in Awka, Col. Jude Obi (Rtd), President of ASN, highlighted the dire financial conditions faced by AVG operatives. Currently, each AVG member earns a salary of N100,000, which ASN argues is insufficient given the harsh economic conditions and the significant risks associated with their duties. The group is advocating for an increase in salaries to between N200,000 and N300,000 to better reflect the economic realities and the demanding nature of their work.

“The current salary of N100,000 is inadequate and does not meet the basic needs of the operatives,” Col. Obi said. “In today’s economy, this amount is almost meaningless, as it cannot even cover the cost of a bag of rice. An increase in salary is crucial for improving their standard of living and boosting morale.”

The ASN also called for immediate upgrades to the operational equipment of the AVG. Many of the existing vehicles used by the operatives are outdated and have suffered significant wear and tear. The group emphasized the need for new vehicles and better arms and ammunition to enhance the effectiveness of the AVG in combating high-profile crimes.

In addition to financial and material support, ASN is advocating for the establishment of insurance and incentive programs to protect AVG members in the event of death or serious injury. The group also stressed the importance of retraining operatives to ensure they are well-prepared to handle their responsibilities effectively.

“If by October 2024, the salary review has not been addressed, we will have no choice but to organize withdrawal protests to draw attention to their plight,” Col. Obi warned. He urged the governor to take swift action to avoid such measures.

To further bolster security, ASN recommended the creation of additional security sectors, including Ogbunka-Umunze, Agulu-Nanka-Umuchu, Ogbaru-Ugwuanocha, Azia-Lilu, and Otuocha-Anam. These new sectors are proposed to enhance the fight against the resurgence of criminal activities and to curb the influence of criminal elements terrorizing the state.

Col. Obi also suggested that the governor allocate a portion of the state’s security vote, which runs into billions of Naira, to address these urgent security challenges. “The funds available for security should be utilized effectively to improve the current situation and support our operatives,” he said.

The ASN’s demands reflect mounting frustration over the persistent security issues in Anambra State and the need for comprehensive reforms to support those on the front lines of the fight against crime.
