Anambra Police Rescue Six, Confirm One Fatality At Onitsha Head Bridge Gas Explosion

A tragic gas explosion at a plumbing market along Uga Street, near the Onitsha Head Bridge, has left one person dead and six others injured, the Anambra State Police Command has confirmed.

The incident, which occurred on Thursday, May 16, 2025, was reportedly triggered by a welding gas cylinder that exploded while a welder was working on a metal component, allegedly due to excessive heat exposure.

Operatives from the Onitsha Head Bridge Divisional Police Headquarters swiftly responded to the scene, complementing the rescue efforts initiated by good-spirited individuals in the area. The police were able to evacuate six victims to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention. The deceased has been taken to a morgue.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Command disclosed that the area has been secured to prevent any attempt by criminal elements to exploit the situation.

“The police have taken steps to ensure that criminal-minded persons do not take advantage of the situation to perpetrate acts of lawlessness,” Ikenga stated.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, *CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc MNIPS PhD*, has expressed deep concern over the incident and urged residents to prioritize safety when handling gas equipment.

He also provided key safety tips to help prevent future occurrences, including:

* Regular inspection and maintenance of gas cylinder equipment.
* Proper storage of gas cylinders in well-ventilated and secure locations.
* Strict adherence to manufacturers’ guidelines and safety protocols when operating gas-related tools.

The Anambra State Police Command has urged business owners, welders, and artisans who use gas-powered equipment to always take precautionary measures seriously to avoid loss of lives and property.
